Contact Lens Care in Colder Months: Do’s and Don’ts

As temperatures drop and the air gets drier, your eyes often feel the effects before anything else. For contact lens wearers, winter can bring unique challenges like dryness, irritation, and discomfort. The good news is that a few simple habits can help keep your lenses clean, comfortable, and safe all season long.

At Ambleside Family Optometry, we want your vision to stay clear and comfortable through every season. Here are some of the most important do’s and don’ts for wearing and caring for your contact lenses during the colder months.

Do: Keep Your Eyes Hydrated

Winter air is naturally dry, and indoor heating only makes it worse. That combination can cause your contact lenses to lose moisture, leading to irritation or blurry vision.

To help:

  • Use doctor-approved lubricating eye drops to relieve dryness.
  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support natural tear production.
  • Run a humidifier at home to add moisture to the air.

If you still experience dryness, book a visit at Ambleside Family Optometry. Our team can check for signs of dry eye and recommend the right drops or lens materials for your needs.

Don’t: Sleep or Shower in Your Lenses

Even in winter, water and lenses do not mix. Showering, swimming, or sleeping in your contact lenses increases the risk of eye infections. Water can introduce harmful microorganisms that attach to your lenses and irritate your eyes.

Always remove your lenses before bed, and never rinse or store them in tap water. Use a fresh solution daily and follow the replacement schedule recommended by your optometrist at Ambleside Family Optometry.

Do: Clean and Store Properly

Proper cleaning and storage are essential year-round, but especially in winter when cold weather can affect how your solution and case perform.

  • Always wash and dry your hands before handling your lenses.
  • Use only the cleaning solution recommended by your optometrist.
  • Replace your contact lens case every three months.
  • Store your lenses at room temperature, away from direct heat sources.

If your lenses ever feel uncomfortable or appear damaged, replace them immediately rather than trying to push through the irritation.

Don’t: Ignore Discomfort

If your eyes feel gritty, red, or sore, do not assume it is just the cold weather. Contact lens discomfort can signal dryness, an incorrect fit, or even infection.

If you notice persistent irritation, take out your lenses and wear your glasses instead. Then, schedule an appointment with Ambleside Family Optometry to have your eyes checked. Our optometrists can determine whether a different type of lens, cleaning system, or wearing schedule would help.

Do: Switch to Glasses When Needed

On especially cold or windy days, or when your eyes are feeling dry, consider giving your eyes a break from contact lenses. Wearing your glasses for a day or two allows your eyes to rest and rehydrate.

Many of our patients at Ambleside Family Optometry keep a stylish pair of glasses on hand for these situations. Our team can help you choose frames that not only look great but also protect your eyes from the elements.
